I was born and bred in Stoke and educated at the Universities of Hull, Leeds, Nottingham and Manchester and Trinity & All Saints' College, Leeds. I trained for the priesthood at Lincoln Theological College. Before ordination I taught modern languages at a school in Doncaster for a number of years.
I served my title at a parish in Harpenden in the diocese of St Albans and then worked as an ecumenical chaplain and lecturer at Keele University and was also associate minister of the small parish church of Keele. I ran the university's extramural programmes for theology and religious studies, organised retreats, trained spiritual guides and was involved in clergy development.
After that - while continuing to lecture at Keele - I was drawn to work with the homeless and refugees in central Manchester and then with people with mental health problems, first as Stockport's Mental Health Advocate and then as co-ordinator of a large mental health charity, while helping out in parishes in south Manchester. In early 2001 I became chaplain to psychiatry in north Manchester and also priest in charge of a small parish. In the summer of 2003 I joined the team at St Peter's House.
My wife, Jayne Prestwood, is Vice-Principal of the Ordained Local Ministry and Reader Training Courses in the diocese of Manchester and an examining chaplain to the Bishop of Manchester. I have three daughters: Laura is currently training for the priesthood and will serve in a parish near Sheffield from next summer, Fiona is working as an artist and illustrator and is just opening a studio in Manchester and Hannah is looking forward to her third birthday. We also have two cats.
I continue to develop my interests in practical theology and spirituality (visit us at www.manchesterspirituality.org), writing articles and a book and am a practising storyteller and greatly enjoy painting in oils.
I am available for all those involved in the higher education community in the city, and especially those involved with the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, whether as students or as staff of any kind.
I am also a Vocations Adviser in the diocese and, as such, am available to all and any who feel they want to explore how God might be calling them to ministry in the church.
