St Peter’s House provides 2000 meals to children in Manchester this summer

Throughout August we joined forces with Manchester Mind to play our part in making sure that children in Manchester who would normally receive a free school meal during term time didn’t go hungry during the summer holidays.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of forty of our amazing volunteers and three equally amazing members of staff, we have been able to provide more than 2000 meals over the last 4 weeks. The activity was led by the team from The Well, our holistic and practical response to the pandemic that continues to be at the heart of everything we do as we move beyond the crisis.

The food was provided as part of Manchester City Council’s Holiday Activities and Food programme; set up to provide ways for children to play sport, try new activities and meet new friends throughout the summer holidays – while also providing lunch.

Our team provided individual packed lunches which were a simple but nutritious affair – a sandwich, snack bar, carrots, cucumber sticks and water – and were delivered by Manchester Mind to children’s projects across Manchester including The Powerhouse in Moss Side, M13 Youth Project in Ardwick, Anson House and Longsight Youth Project in Longsight.

Alongside this, we have been involved in providing food and running healthy cooking workshops at Moss Side Millennium Powerhouse to inspire children to learn more about nutrition and how to cook healthy foods.

Hannah, our Director of Engagement and Development says “We are delighted to have been able to play a small part in this wonderful programme, providing sustenance to the children of our community, and helping them to thrive and live enriched and healthy lives”.
